Bread Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  • Add the oil and salt, then gradually mix in the flour until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  • Cover and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

For added flavor, consider mixing in herbs or spices, and enjoy variations like Honey Wheat Bread or Cinnamon Raisin Bread.
